Independence isn't a brand value I picked off a list. I've been stubborn about it since I was a kid, the child who had to do it herself, her own way, no matter how long it took. So when I found myself a single mom raising my oldest son, navigating situations that weren't working, I did what I've always done. I looked for the next plan, the next door, the next way to build something stable for us, on our own terms.

Then my youngest was born, and everything sharpened. He came home with health problems and an oxygen tank, and he was in and out of the hospital constantly. Every option in front of me ended the exact same way: with me handing my fragile baby to somebody else. Daycare meant exposing him to every illness that kept putting him in a hospital bed. Working from home meant taking calls over his crying because he needed me and I was on someone else's clock. Going back to an office meant leaving work constantly for a sick baby who wouldn't even take a bottle. I tried the options. Every single one of them asked me to choose work over protecting my child.

And I had already lived that choice once. My oldest spent most of his early years in daycare, being raised by other people while I worked. Maternity leave gave me time with my boys I had never had before, and the thought of handing it back was unbearable. All I wanted, as a mother, was to protect my child. But there was nobody to catch me. Nobody to watch my kids while I figured something out. No safety net at all. So there was no other option. I built the solution.

I sat down and made a list of what I was actually good at. What I could build. What I could sell from a kitchen table with a baby who wouldn't sleep. I built a website for an idea I was testing, and something happened. I fell completely in love with it. Not the tools. The moment when something vague and half-formed in someone's head becomes a real thing they can point to and say, that's it. That exists now because I made it.

Before I started Rootline I worked inside a web agency and watched clients pay thousands for websites they couldn't access, couldn't edit, and couldn't leave. Dependency engineered on purpose. People trapped on purpose. I knew exactly what I wasn't going to build.

But as I started healing, choosing myself, choosing independence, I realized what the saying leaves out. You can break the pot. You can replant. And every planted seed starts with roots. That's Rootline. It's the beginning of my future, and the beginning of me helping others build theirs.
